Philippe Bragard’s 1998 doctoral thesis was devoted to fortification engineers in the Spanish Netherlands from 1504 to 1713 and included over 450 biographies. This book features these biographies presenting official engineers, military men, master-masons, gunners, teachers and religious men from theNetherlandsas well as from other countries.

Fully illustrated with maps and plans, it also includes a selection of documents that shed light on a section of society in Modern Times and on the work of engineers.
