Briançon, Sentinelle des Alpes
BORNECQUE Robert
Briançon is clearly unique as it is the highest town in France, surrounded by fortifications and dominated by high mountains. The modern town has now spread out of the tight bounds of the Vauban city to extend into the valley. Its pleasant climate, the richness of the natural and historical heritage, and the charm of its streets, squares and fountains make Briançon a true tourist destination. However, its history is that of the age-old struggle of mountain dwellers against a hostile environment and against the perils that were lying in wait for a border town.
